At 4:21 a.m., Trenton police and fire responded to Route 29 North at Calhoun Street and found two vehicles with catastrophic damage, Captain Lisette Rios of the Trenton police said.
One of the vehicles was overturned with the driver trapped inside and another was on fire, Rios said. The driver of a Toyota Highlander, a 60-year-old Burlington Township resident, was traveling south in the northbound lane of Route 29 and crashed head on with a Jeep Gladiator, Rios said.
This caused the Jeep Gladiator to veer into the middle lane where it was rear ended by a Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 24-year-old Trenton resident. The Jeep Gladiator and the Jeep Cherokee both overturned several times, Rios said, and the Jeep Gladiator’s engine compartment erupted in flames.
The driver of the Gladiator, a 33-year-old Trenton resident, was unconscious as the vehicle caught fire, Rios said. He was pulled from the vehicle by an unknown person, Rios said. The driver of the Cherokee was able to exit his vehicle on his own, Rios said.
The driver of the Highlander had to be extricated from her vehicle by the Trenton Fire Department, Rios said. She was transported to a nearby hospital for serious life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition with multiple fractures, Rios said.
The driver of the Gladiator was also transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released, Rios said.
The crash remains under investigation, Rios said.
